As a kid, I always wanted to get to decorate a pine-wood derby car. With 4 brothers, there were a lot of them at my house and I thought it a little unfair that only the boys got to do it.
When we started planning a Daddy-Daughter night for the 8-9 yr old girls from Activity Days (my church calling), this was the first thing to come to mind. A few weeks before the event, all the girls came to my house and made bow ties for their dads and mini bow tie clips for their hair. AND I gave them each a pine-wood derby car and I put out paint, stickers, jewels, etc. for them to decorate their cars. (I spray painted them white beforehand as a base.)
So when they went home that day, all the dads had to do was to hammer in the wheels. I didn't want any of the parents to feel stressed about it, like they had to cut and paint some fancy car. In the email I sent out about the event, I let them know that it was a pretty casual pine-wood derby...no weigh in or anything. WELL....when the dad's heard there was no weigh in, they took it the opposite direction to make these fancy, HEAVY cars. They drilled into the beautiful pink paint jobs to stack quarters inside. Some of them were close to 5 lbs. The girl that won it all, had taped a hand held fan onto the top. she would turn it on right before her races and that car flew. pretty funny.
I loved how the pictures from our "photo booth" turned out and we also did relay races and a Dad's cupcake decorating contest. I loved seeing the girls have fun with their dad's and how much those dad's love their girls. I still remember going to a daddy-daughter activity like this at the church when i was their age and how much i loved it.
