making cake stands with old plates and candlesticks is not the newest idea out there. I have seen it on plenty-of DIY blogs/sites. It didn't get excited to make some until I started finding a few vintage glass cake stands at the flea market. I needed more than a few for the "look" I wanted, so I started collecting pieces to make them.
First of all, the "look" I wanted was from Martha Stewart's kitchen in this article I ripped out last year....her 50 top kitchen tips-that included tons of pictures of her kitchen-maybe my favorite kitchen EVER.

I've been collecting short, squatty candlesticks and glass platters at thrift stores over the past year. The hardest part is finding a completely flat platter. Some of mine have raised edges, I just can't use them for 9"round cakes....but it still works for tons of other things. I've collected enough that we made 13 with my activity day girls last December to give to their moms for Christmas. the other day, I noticed my glass plate collection had grown, so I made 5 more. (i can usually find the candlesticks and plates for 25 or 50 cents).
I attach mine with hot glue or silicone. Either seems to work fine, even when I run them through the dishwasher. I love giving away a cake and saying, "Keep the stand!"
