And pretty maids all in a row.in other words, like a weed. It's funny how the hardest part of my garden has been keeping it down to size. I have to continually pick lettuce and herbs to that they don't go to seed (meaning start to flower). We have been pulling in the fruits of our labor. In the last few weeks, we've harvested and eaten...
-every type of herb
-lettuce (mine is bitter)
-beets (that are HUGE and that the boys planted as seeds in late may)
-a few green beans-mine did not do well
-zucchini and yellow summer squash
-tons of cherry tomatoes, but my big tomatoes aren't ripe yet
-jalopano's, banana peppers, bell peppers, and baby sweet peppers
-green onions
-1 potato
then as far as fruit goes....
-strawberries, blackberries and lots and lots of blueberries
-1 fig and some apples
Things I'm still waiting to mature-
-my other 22 fruit trees
-shallots
-garlic
-carrots
-lima beans
-rest of tomatoes
I'm getting ready to plant my pumpkin, butternut squash, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. Sugar snap peas and all peas get planted early fall.
some things I've learned-
1. good dirt is key-thus my raised bed because our dirt is clay
2. i'm supposed to fertilize my garden every week, fruit trees and berry bushes 4x a year
3. all of the holes in the leaves are from caterpillars. spray off caterpillar poop with hose and dust with "garden dust" -an organic product to get rid of caterpillars
4. I can keep growing almost all herbs year round in san diego
5. Tomato plants get HUGE. just as big as everyone tells you they will
6. for the most results for your efforts, plant some herbs. you can start using them the day you get them. you don't have to wait for a month to get just a few things off of them. and they don't take up tons of room.
PS do you like the galvanized metal seat around my garden? It was a little harder to figure out than you would imagine, but i love the extra detail in gives that part of the yard (and extra seating)
