making placemats as a craft

my all time favortie advise about kids birthday is in my FAVORITE design book, Downtown Chic, by courtney Novogratz...star of 9 by design (sorry...i'll stop talking about that show one day) and mother of 7 kids. In the book, she said that people ask her all the time how in the world she pulls off birthday parties for 7 kids. she said all you have to do is "make a cake and invite over some friends and you have a party."
I've started to follow her lead. I just invited the neighborhood boys (+beckam) and told them to wear a costume. The morning of his birthday, Miles, Parker and I went and picked out balloons, a pinata, a bag of candy and a cake. is there a better way for a 3 year old to spend a birthday? Craig took him to IN-n-Out for lunch while I decorated and made "rainbow" snack plates for the party. Put the trampoline in the family room and you've got yourself a party. This was my first kids brithday party with only kids (no parents-except Julie who stayed and helped entertain-so nice). I couldn't believe how low pressure it was because of that.
The kids definitely didn't care that the red-velvet cake was from costco and was not homemade. and the best part.....Miles of smiles loved every minute.
