I did a little sewing this morning and made some baby quilts for some friends that just had babies. My friend Jenni taught me how to make these easy baby quilts 4 or 5 years ago and have I have made quite a few since then. (and a lot of big quilts). One of the hard things with making quilts is the actual "quilting"-getting the back, the front and the batting in the middle to all stick together. One solution is to send it off to a quilting shop where they use huge machines to put fancy, squiggly lines all over it. Another solution is the Relief Society knots....using yarn to tie it together at different points all over the quilt. The way that Jenni taught me and that I've used ever since is to sew lines in X's all over the quilt. This is easiest when you quilt with squares and when your quilt isn't huge (I have done it on some pretty big picnic quilts...it's just a lot of fabric to shove through your sewing machine). It works best when you use clear thread for your top thread. Since the squares are all different colors, colored thread, even white, would really show up and kinda ruin the effect.
I love the back of the quilts. That fabric made me want to have twins-a boy and a girl. I got all of the fabric while I was in Phoenix at
QuiltZ, one of the best quilting stores outside of Utah.
I drove home from Phoenix yesterday afternoon, with Parker asking the whole time, "Tell me again why we can't bring the pig home to live with us? Grandma doesn't even want it a her house." That last part is pretty accurate. You should have seen my moms face when my dad walked in with that pig.
